Judging Seminar

Just got back from the judging seminar. It was very interesting. Some of the points covered:

1. It's a beauty pageant. What Miss America is looking for is a beautiful woman who is relatable.

2. Just because you win a preliminary doesn't necessarily mean you'll win the title. A contestant must score consistently across the board.

3. For talent, the judges are looking for both technique and entertainment value. A contestant may be very good technically, but if she can't connect with the audience, that will count against her. Conversely, a contestant may be entertaining, but if she isn't any good technically, that will count against her as well.

4. We went over the job description of Miss Louisiana. She must be "on call" 24/7 through her year.

5. In swimsuit, a contestant must be physically fit. This means she must be toned and physically fit for her body type. She shouldn't be overweight or underweight. These judges also don't like a contestant who is overly tanned. A tan should be natural looking.
