Planet Hollywood to Host Miss America 2010

PLANET HOLLYWOOD RESORT & CASINO TO HOST 2010 MISS AMERICA PAGEANT on TLC

Posted Thursday, May 28, 2009

President and CEO of the Miss America Organization, Art McMaster, announced today that the 2010 Miss America Pageant will return to Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for a week of preliminary competitions, culminating in a live telecast on TLC, Saturday, January 30 at 8 p.m. EST. The announcement was made at a press conference in Puerto Rico to welcome back the Miss Puerto Rico Scholarship Program to the Miss America Pageant after nearly 50 years!

"We are thrilled to be returning to Planet Hollywood again for our 5th consecutive year," said Art McMaster, President & CEO of the Miss America Organization. "The 2009 Pageant exceeded our expectations, and we are continuing to build on new traditions in Las Vegas."

With the addition of Miss Puerto Rico competing this year, there will be 53 Miss America contestants sweeping into town in January to begin preliminary competitions in Interview, Lifestyle & Fitness, Talent and Evening Wear.

“We are so excited to have the most talented, smart and beautiful girls in the nation returning here to their home at Planet Hollywood,” said Bill Feather, president of Planet Hollywood Worldwide Resorts. "The last four years have been wonderful experiences for not only Planet Hollywood, but for the city of Las Vegas, and the Miss America Pageant returning to our property gives us the opportunity to showcase our magnificent resort once again.”

"The 2009 Miss America Pageant on TLC was a great success, taking the ratings crown as the most-watched program on cable," said Brent Zacky, Vice President of Development for TLC. "We look forward to working with the Miss America Organization and Planet Hollywood to make the 2010 broadcast event even bigger."

The three nights of preliminaries will take place on January 26, 27, and 28 at Planet Hollywood's Theatre for the Performing Arts. Tickets for the preliminaries, as well as the Miss America Pageant finals will be available to the public at www.ticketmaster.com starting in December.

Miss America has called Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino home since moving to Las Vegas from Atlantic City in 2006. Katie Stam, of Seymour, Indiana is the current Miss America.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. For more information, go to www.missamerica.org.

Travel Like a Beauty Queen: from CNN

After her crowning in January, Katie Stam, Miss America 2009, went from beauty queen to traveling machine -- within minutes. "The moment they put that crown on my head I started work...literally," she told CNN.
Miss America Katie Stam is constantly on the road.

Miss America Katie Stam is constantly on the road.

The Indiana native will spend a year crisscrossing the country promoting her platform of community service. "I change locations every two or three days, and that's exactly how it's going to be all year," Stam says.

From visiting children in hospitals in Pennsylvania to flipping pancakes for charity in California, Miss America lives a life on the road. And with such a hectic schedule, she has picked up a few tips on how to stay sane while traveling.

"The most important tip I could offer anybody who does a lot of traveling is to stay as organized as possible," Stam says. To keep from losing items on the road, Stam keeps everything in the same place in her suitcase, including her crown. "It's really funny, but it helps me kind of keep a clear mind," she explains.

She also unpacks a little as soon as she arrives in her hotel room. "You realize when you get on the road, and that's your life, your hotel becomes your home," Stam says. "And so you really need to feel that you're coming home to your room, to your place where all of your things are."

Stam also stresses the importance of a good night's sleep. "It's absolutely essential to get a full night's rest or at least quality rest," she says. However she also acknowledges the difficulties of sleeping a full eight hours while traveling.

But the ever chipper Miss America has a trick for getting around the wonky work hours: "If you know you only have 10 minutes, you take a quick 10 minute nap."

With airplanes being her primary mode of transportation, the beauty queen also has advice for the frequent flyer on how to stay fresh while on the go. "It's tricky," she says. "A lot of people lose their luggage and stuff. So I always keep my makeup with me, put on a little powder before I go somewhere."

And when you're Miss America, somewhere could be anywhere.

Whatever Became Of...

...Gail Gleason, Miss Louisiana 1954?

Her former son-in-law Ron Von Blomberg updates us:

Had the pleasure of knowing Gail as my mother- in- law
for a short 15years. She had a fantastic wearable art
gallery in Southampton, NY called GAYLE WILLSON GALLERY.
After her second marriage she was involved with a man
whom murdered her in 2004 and stole every penny
she had...
She was a pillar in the community and is terribly
missed by
all who knew her.

Thank you, Ron, for your update.
